Hobamine® (2-hydroxybenzylamine acetate or 2-HOBA) is a naturally occurring compound involved at the cellular level. It targets and neutralizes reactive dicarbonyl electrophiles, such as isolevuglandins (IsoLGs) — harmful byproducts of lipid peroxidation that can damage DNA, proteins, and cell membranes.
This precision-based action makes Hobamine® a powerful tool in the fight against oxidative stress and aging at the cellular level.
Hobamine® offers a more targeted approach to oxidative balance, helping the body neutralize damaging byproducts without disrupting normal immune or metabolic function.
Potential Benefits of Hobamine®:
– Support healthy cell function
– Balanced immune response
– Protection against oxidative stress and inflammation
Every day, cells are exposed to stress from lifestyle, environmental factors, and metabolic activity. Over time, this can impact how well cells repair and function.
Hobamine® helps support resilience at the cellular level, working to preserve DNA and protein integrity and maintain optimal cell performance—even under stress. Its mechanism is designed to promote cellular defense where and when it’s needed most.

In The Natural View podcast with Todd Pauli and Maggie Jaqua, they have special guest Shawn Baier, VP of Business Development at TSI Group, to discuss healthy aging, overlooked component, and nutritional ingredients to promote healthy aging.
There are many various categories to focus on when we talk about healthy aging like joints, bones, and cognitive health. One area that tends to get overlooked when it comes to healthy aging is muscle health.
Unfortunately, we will all experience age-related muscle loss and if not addressed at all it can become a debilitating issue. Our muscles carry out the physical demands of life and preventing muscle loss is easier than trying to restore lost muscle mass and strength.
The good news is there is an ingredient that is clinically proven to help prevent muscle loss – myHMB, scientifically known as beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate or HMB.
HMB in the past has been predominately known as a supplement for bodybuilders to help build muscle and improve recovery, but there is an array of research showing its potential in aging demographics to help prevent muscle loss during times of inactivity like bed rest after an illness or injury. HMB can benefit any individual that wants to improve quality of life as we age.
We all experience oxidative stress in our lives, and while we can mitigate some of it, we cannot eliminate it. Factors such environmental factors, lack of sleep, poor nutrition, alcohol, overexercising can all cause oxidative stress and when excessive oxidative stress happens it creates highly reactive molecules called free radicals and these can have a negative impact on the health of our cells and bodies.
Hobamine, or 2-hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA), is a naturally occurring compound that is at the forefront of new developments to support cellular health, particularly as we age.
Hobamine (2-HOBA) works by rapidly capturing specific reactive compounds formed by oxidative stress. This capture prevents those compounds from binding to and damaging other cellular components like proteins, lipids, or DNA and impeding normal function of the cell.

The new NIH-funded study on Hobamine, Inflammation Biomarker Response to Oral 2-Hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA) Acetate in Healthy Humans, received the Nutrition Research Project of the Year Award.
This study showed the impact of 2-HOBA (Hobamine) supplementation on inflammatory biomarkers in healthy individuals and addressed the concern of maintaining a balanced immune system to prevent the progression of several diseases associated with chronic inflammation. The findings of the study suggest that supplementing with 2 HOBA (Hobamine) can support a balanced immune system by enhancing inflammatory biomarkers in healthy individuals and reducing the levels of the protein TWEAK, which stimulates inflammation and tumor development.
“This interesting and well-designed study, funded by NIH, found that 2 HOBA (Hobamine) supplementation may promote a healthy balance of the immune system by improving inflammatory biomarkers in healthy individuals. Published in a peer review journal that indicates strong credibility, and it therefore provides opportunities for formulators and developers to add Hobamine, to their immune focused formulations, enabling healthy individuals to be more proactive about maintaining their immune readiness. The novelty of the ingredient and the impacts on inflammatory markers in healthy people really helped this project stand out,” stated Stephen Daniells, PhD, Editor-in-Chief of NutraIngredients-USA.
Science continues to evolve on the human body and how there are key markers in human cells and DNA that can give us a better idea on the aging process. With this new knowledge, many specialty ingredients are coming to the forefront to help try to set back our cellular clock.
“Even though there is still no consensus about whether aging is biologically programmed, almost all gerontologists agree aging is a clinical disease responsible for the vast majority of deaths among the world’s populations,” said Marianne McDonagh, Vice President of Sales for Bioenergy Life Science, Inc.
Telomerase is an enzyme that plays a crucial role in the maintenance and protection of our DNA. It is responsible for the extension and preservation of telomeres, which protect caps found at the ends of our chromosomes. The production of telomerase declines with age, and the shortening of telomeres has been linked to various age-related diseases.
Another important process that has been linked to cellular health is the process of senescence. This is where the cells are unable to continue to multiply even in optimal conditions. This process increases with age and can cause cells to express pro-inflammatory cytokines and other toxins that impair tissue function.
“All of these hallmarks represent a reason why the aging of our cells can affect our lives significantly. With a longer lifespan, we don’t always experience a longer health span or high quality of life,” said Shawn Baier, Vice President of Business Development at TSI Group. “It is important to note that supplementation won’t completely reverse cellular aging, but it can address some of the negative effects connected to it.”
Researchers are looking at ingredients to address cellular health, specifically looks at two primary outcomes:
• Inducing the death of senescent cells
• Improving mechanical integrity of healthy cells
TSI Group has recently launched the branded compound Hobamine (2-HOBA). A recent NIH-funded study published in Inflammation showed that 2-HOBA was linked to positive changes in 15 inflammatory biomarkers in two small cohorts of younger and older adults. This ingredient has the potential to ameliorate age-related declines in the immune system’s ability to self-limit its responses. 2-HOBA works as a scavenger of a pro-inflammatory reactive lipid called IsoLG. This can help to prevent the body’s formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from cascading out of control. As a result, ROS are neutralized before they react with DNA, proteins, and other components of the cell.

TSI Group is proud to announce positive results from a recent NIH-funded study on the impact of 2-hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA), TSI’s branded ingredient Hobamine, on inflammatory biomarkers.
The NIH-funded study, published in the journal Inflammation, found that supplementing with 2-HOBA improved as many as 15 inflammatory biomarkers in healthy individuals, thereby promoting a healthy balance of the immune system.
“Normally, inflammation is self-limiting, and its resolution is the first step in the repair and regeneration of injured tissues. Failure of inflammation resolution can lead to the progression of several diseases,” says John A. Rathmacher, Ph.D., Director of Clinical Research and Laboratory Services at MTI BioTech, Inc. That’s why a balanced immune system is incredibly important.
“These results enable us to enter a new space in immune health and will guide us in future research,” comments TSI Group Vice President of Business Development Shawn Baier, M.S., M.B.A. “More significantly, this opens opportunities for formulators and developers to add Hobamine to their immune formulas because it clearly enables healthy individuals to be more proactive about maintaining their immune readiness.”
This concept of immune readiness is perhaps what Baier finds most exciting. “If you don’t have 2-HOBA present, and your body creates these highly-reactive, proinflammatory compounds, it could begin an unhealthy snowball effect. Having 2-HOBA on board means it’s ready and there when it’s needed. It supports your immune system’s ability to stay in balance, even when you are exposed to oxidative stressors.”

As science continues to advance, looking at health at a cellular level has more prominant.
“Cellular health matters because it has an important impact on how well our bodies function, repair themselves, produce new body tissue, and much more,” according to Shawn Baier, vice president of business development with TSI Group’s Innovative Products Division. “As we all know, our immune system and how it responds to various stimuli has an effect on our cellular health, both positively and negatively. Cells form tissues, tissues form organs, and organs form systems that make up the body. Cellular health is the microscopic version of overall health—the healthier our cells, the healthier our body will be since our cells will be working optimally and efficiently with one another. “
Oxidative stress is the primary cause of cellular damage. Excessive oxidative stress causes a buildup of a specific class of free radicals that can cause harm to the body. Unfortunately, it’s merely impossible to eliminate all oxidative stress from our lives because of factors such as environment, poor nutrition, excess alcohol, lack of sleep, stress, and/or simply aging.
Hobamine (2-HOBA), a bio-identical, chemically synthesized version of the naturally occurring compound 2-hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA) found in the buckwheat plant can help combat oxidative stress. What makes Hobamine unique or even radical is that it works by acting specifically against compounds responsible for oxidative damage without blocking the processes needed for healthy cell function.
“Hobamine (2-HOBA) represents a paradigm shift in the approach to reducing the impact of oxidative stress because it is a selective scavenger of high-impact reactive oxygen species (ROS), specifically isolevuglandins (IsoLGs), but doesn’t interfere with or blunt fundamental physiological processes,” said Baier. “Therefore, 2-HOBA helps to return the healthy balance our cells and bodies need.”

As you may know, antioxidants play a crucial role in protecting the body from oxidative stress and damage, which can lead to a variety of health issues. However, recent research suggests that the traditional approach to antioxidants may not be as effective as once thought.
The article delves into these new findings and discusses the latest breakthroughs in antioxidant research, including novel compounds and delivery systems that are changing the game.
There has been a paradigm shift in the traditional approach to health. Cellular health is a new foundational approach to aging and wellness.

As an ingredient for healthy aging, Hobamine has a new unique method to combat oxidative stress without blocking normal physiological function and pathways.
Hobamine is a form of the naturally occurring compound 2-hydroxybenzylamine (2-HOBA). Hobamine works by rapidly capturing specific reactive compounds formed by oxidative stress. This capture prevents those compounds from binding to and damaging other cellular components like proteins, lipids, or DNA and impeding normal function of the cell.
Antioxidants may not be ideal because they block the development of oxidative stress altogether. While that sounds like a good thing, our bodies need reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are created during the process of oxidative stress. Our body needs normal levels of ROS because they are needed for cell signaling and immune system defense.
Instead of consuming high amounts of antioxidants, TSI proposes supplementing with Hobamine.
“The Hobamine story is about the villain versus the hero. The bad guy is what happens when everyday stress results in highly reactive free radical compounds. The hero, Hobamine, sweeps in to lock out the bad guys, creating a compound that is mere waste.” – Shawn Baier, MS, MBA, Vice President of Business Development at TSI Group
TSI states that Hobamine is the only nutritional intervention on the market to address the negative impact of oxidative stress without blocking the body’s normal, healthy processes.
